Here you find an overview of the bachelor's and master's degree programmes we offer. All programmes are taught in Norwegians, selected courses are offered in English.
Bachelor's degree programmes
The three-year Early Childhood Teacher Education programme is equal to 180 ECTS credits and qualifies for the profession of Early Childhood Teacher in a society characterized by diversity and change. Students learn to plan, carry out and assess pedagogical work in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) institutions, and to lead and supervise colleagues.
The study programme is organized as a professional study with 6 interdisciplinary areas, each with a scope of approximately 20 ECTS credits, in addition to a specialization (30 credits) and a bachelor’s thesis (15 credits).
The areas of study are:
- children's development, play and learning
- art, culture and creativity
- society, religion, world views and ethics
- nature, health and movement
- language, text and mathematics
- leadership, cooperation and educational development
The programme also includes 100 days of practical training in connection with the areas of study and the specialization.
QMUC offers six variations of the bachelor's degree programme:
- Early Childhood Teacher Education, Main Model
- Early Childhood Teacher Education, Part-Time (4 years)
- Early Childhood Teacher Education with an Emphasis on Multicultural Understanding
- Early Childhood Teacher Education with an Emphasis on Music, Drama, Arts and Crafts
- Early Childhood Teacher Education with an Emphasis on Nature and Outdoor Life
- Early Childhood Teacher Education with an Emphasis on Leadership, Part-Time (4 years, offered in the town of Kristiansund)
Master's degree programmes
QMUC offers four master's degree programmes within Early Childhood Education and Care. They are all two-year programmes equivalent to 120 ECTS credits.
Early Childhood Education and Care - Early Childhood in a Changing Society
The purpose of the programme is to strengthen the research-based knowledge about children of kindergarten age and about the content of childhood, both in the kindergarten and other institutions for children. Through research-based knowledge the aim is to develop further the pedagogical quality in the work with children, both to ensure children's rights and to carry out professional and discretionary considerations.
Leadership in Early Childhood Education and Care
The programme seeks to enable the student to master executive positions in the ECEC sector in a way that ensures and develops high quality work. The programme provides an insight into the structures and development processes of organizations, society and politics, centred on ECEC organizations. The leadership dimension in managing complex organizations is emphasized.
Child Culture and Arts Education
The aim of the programme is to enable the student to work with a chosen subject in child culture & arts education in kindergartens or other institutions and arenas where children, culture and the arts are involved. The programme qualifies to lead and mentor small-scaled projects in research and development within the early childhood arenas and among other groups of children.
Special Needs Education with a Focus on Early Childhood
The programme focuses on knowledge about children with special challenges related to development, play and learning – children with special needs. Children with special needs also have ordinary needs: a child is a child. Each individual child is its own subject by virtue of being a child and shall be recognised as such. Recognition of the intrinsic value of the child and the childhood constitutes a basis in the study programme.
